SUMMIT POINTE 2019 A LOOK AT THE YEAR IN REVIEW
2019 was an eventful year at Summit Pointe! The year abounded with events, ceremonies, news, construction progress, and a real sense of excitement surrounding Coastal Virginia’s newest urban lifestyle community. As we move into a new year full of promise, we take time to reflect on the progress made at Summit Pointe in 2019.
The year began with a buzz as Summit Pointe Realty, LLC announced Phase Two of development on January 24, 2019. Four blocks of construction along Belaire Avenue, including ground-level retail and restaurant spaces, a new office tower, and Summit Pointe’s first living community, Helix, were introduced as the next developments underway. Upcoming residential communities Mosaic and The Belaire were also announced.
Updates about the Summit Pointe project were presented to local business leaders at the 2019 Chesapeake State of the City event. Attendees got an exclusive glance at what’s to come at Summit Pointe, with a special presentation from Dollar Tree Vice President of Portfolio Management Chris Williams discussing the lifestyle community’s progress to date and sharing a video presentation about future growth. This event also marked the official announcement of Summit Pointe’s newest office building, 555 Belaire.
In 2019 we were thrilled to hear from a number of representatives from the Summit Pointe development teams, who shared their perspective on the development underway. Superintendent Bob Barker of Clancy and Theys shared “Everyone in the area knows Summit Pointe is coming and this has created a lot of buzz.”, while Burrell Saunders of Saunders + Crouse Architects called Summit Pointe “the core of an emerging new downtown”.
We also got a chance to speak with representatives from commercial and residential leasing teams at Summit Pointe. Pat Mugler and Perry Frazer of Colliers International’s Office Leasing team gave us a glimpse into the benefits of office leasing at Summit Pointe. “We are offering a new product, in a great location, at a reasonable cost.” The team shared about the upcoming office space, which boasts numerous benefits for employers and employees alike.
Tarra Secrest, Director of Marketing and Property Development at Drucker + Falk, spoke with the Summit Pointe team about living at Summit Pointe, as well as upcoming community events. When asked about her perspective on living at Helix, Summit Pointe’s first apartment community, Tarra shared “If I could sum it up, I would say that living at Summit Pointe will be an innovative, next-level experience”. The Helix apartments website features a glimpse of the interior features that define this standard.
Phase Two construction officially began on June 4, 2019, with a ceremonial Groundbreaking event along Belaire Avenue. Leaders from Dollar Tree and the City of Chesapeake met at this event to celebrate and break ground on the construction site of the 555 Belaire office building and Helix apartment community. Highlights from this event included speeches from Executive Chairman of Dollar Tree Bob Sasser and Chesapeake Mayor Rick West, who both discussed the bright future ahead for Summit Pointe.
A campus dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on the Dollar Tree campus on August 24, 2019. Attendees toured the Dollar Tree offices, listened to speeches by Dollar Tree executives and City of Chesapeake representatives, and enjoyed refreshments and a toast to success for Dollar Tree and Summit Pointe. The event concluded with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
The last event celebrated in 2019 at Summit Pointe was the October 23 Topping Out ceremony. Leaders from Dollar Tree, the Summit Pointe development team, and the City of Chesapeake gathered at the construction site for Summit Pointe’s newest office tower, 555 Belaire. Dignitaries at the event signed a steel beam, which was then lifted into place to complete the steel erection for 555 Belaire.
Construction along Belaire Avenue has been making fast progress. The completion of the first two blocks of construction on Belaire Avenue is right around the corner, with both 555 Belaire and the Helix apartments scheduled for completion in summer 2020.
